About this episode
Jo interviews Caroline Goyder, speaker coach and author of Gravitas, about three ways to be yourself as a public speaker. Caroline explains that many people fear speaking due to past experiences of judgment and offers practical tools to feel safer and more authentic. First, shift focus from impressing to asking “How can I help?” by understanding what the audience needs and simplifying the message. Second, use the body to create calm and energy by moving, breathing, and getting present before speaking so the room feels less threatening. Third, use breath and pauses, voice is out-breath and pauses are in-breath, to slow rushing, reset the nervous system, and make speaking more conversational, supported by rehearsal, recording, or visualisation.00:00 Welcome to the Masterclass00:43 Why Speaking Feels Risky02:09 Tip 1 Help the Audience03:08 Audience First Preparation05:43 Tip 2 Get in Your Body07:03 Warm Up and Energy09:51 Tip 3 Pause and Breathe13:40 Practice to Beat Fear14:51 Key Takeaways and WrapYou can discover more about Caroline and her work: https://carolinegoyder.com/Or follow her on Instagram @carolinegoyderSupport the showEdited and produced by Jo Glynn-Smith 2025.
