Arizona, Houston, and Iowa State have moved into the Sweet 16 with the kind of authority that suggests a Big 12 champion is a distinct possibility.

The conference’s elite tier has navigated the first weekend with a combined scoring margin that should terrify the rest of the field.
Arizona (1-seed): Tommy Lloyd’s squad has lived up to the top billing. After a 34-point demolition of LIU, they survived a gritty Utah State team in the second round, proving they can win both track meets and half-court grinds.
Houston (2-seed): The Cougars are currently playing some of the most dominant defense in tournament history. They smothered Idaho in the opener and followed it up with a 31-point thumping of Texas A&M, out-rebounding the Aggies by 17.
Iowa State (2-seed): Despite an injury scare to Joshua Jefferson, the Cyclones delivered a masterclass against Kentucky, handing the Wildcats their worst tournament loss in over 50 years (82–63).
Conference Context
While the Big Ten made headlines by advancing six teams to the second weekend, the Big 12's strength remains in its high-end ceiling. Having three teams ranked as 1 or 2 seeds reach the Sweet 16 reinforces that the grueling double-round-robin schedule of the Big 12 regular season prepares its leaders for the physical toll of March. As the tournament shifts to the regionals, the Big 12 remains the only conference with multiple 1 or 2 seeds still standing, keeping the league firmly in the hunt for a national title.
