Arizona: The Depth and Interior Lockdown
The #1 Wildcats (34–2) enter San Jose as a 7.5-point favorite over Arkansas, and for good reason. While Darius Acuff Jr. has been the tournament's breakout star for the Hogs, Arizona’s interior defense is a "black hole" for Arkansas’ primary scoring method. The Razorbacks rank 50th nationally in two-point shot rate, but they are running into an Arizona wall that ranks 2nd in the country in opponent two-point percentage (43.7%).
With Motiejus Krivas and Tobe Awaka (9.3 RPG) anchoring the paint, Arkansas will be forced to become a perimeter-reliant team—something they aren't equipped for against Arizona’s length. The analytics suggest Arizona’s +9.3 point margin against tournament teams and their superior rebounding (+7.0 margin) will simply exhaust a shorter Arkansas rotation.
Houston: The "Home" Defensive Siege
For #2 Houston, their clash with Illinois is effectively a home game at the Toyota Center. The Cougars’ path to victory is written in the "extra possession" column. Houston leads the Sweet 16 field in Points Per Possession Allowed (0.78) and ranks 12th nationally in offensive rebounding.
The Illini rely heavily on three-point volume (top 15 in frequency), but Houston’s defense specializes in "shot-clock drainage," limiting opponents to just 31.4% from deep. Expect Joseph Tugler to neutralize David Mirkovic inside, while freshman star Kingston Flemings (16.4 PPG) dictates the pace. If Houston turns this into a low-possession "rock fight," their 65.5% win probability becomes an inevitability.
