Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped as a youth by Irish raiders and enslaved in Ireland for several years, during which time he turned fervently to prayer. After escaping and returning home, he later received a call in a dream to return to Ireland as a missionary. Ordained a bishop, he preached the Gospel throughout the island, converting many, establishing churches and clergy, and confronting the remnants of pagan worship. His humble writings, especially the Confessio, reveal his deep trust in God and his gratitude for being chosen for this work despite his own perceived unworthiness. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
